For instance, the absence of her parents at home is quite realistic in her case. I found this message to be very powerful, as many young adults have to endure such problems.

Though she is wealthy and can get away with anything because her father is a judge, Kimberlee is thoroughly unhappy. Her narrative voice is mature, sometimes even humorous with her snarky comments. It was refreshing to read from Kimberlee's point of view though, because readers get to learn of her "issues" directly and without any assumptions. It ended with a cliffhanger that is sure to get readers jazzed up for what Kimberlee's future holds. Had I read it first, I would have some interest in Life After Theft. Nevertheless, as a prequel novella One Day More was okay. Now, since this is a prequel, it would be unfair to review this short story as though I was expecting questions and doubts from Life After Theft to be addressed. All I got from this novella is that Kimberlee is a bitchy kleptomaniac with a lot of emotional insecurities. Unfortunately, I found nothing significant, nothing that made me say "now that explains a lot". Having read an ARC of Life After Theft, I was really expecting for this digital short to be functional. Pike takes the theme of the poor little rich girl and turns her into a headstrong antiheroine who, even if you don't feel sorry for her as the second half of the novella takes a dark turn, you can't help but want to see what she does next. This is a snappy, fast read that ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, one that certainly worked on me and got me to read Life After Theft afterward. She calls herself pathetic, and yet even though I probably wasn't supposed to like her, I was still rooting for her. Kimberlee isn't happy, but she is feisty, and her fierce attitude, combined with an edge of yearning for happiness, is what makes her a fascinating heroine. Barring that, she turns her compulsion into an OCD haven filled with all the stuff she's taken.

Her parents are rich, but more than their money, she wants their attention. She's a compulsive kleptomaniac, and seemingly never met a rule she didn't want to break. Here, we meet Kimberlee Schaffer, who seems to have everything a girl could want. While one reviewer recommends reading Life After Theft first, I think you could read them in either order. I bought it after hearing Aprilynne speak at RT Booklovers Convention, and decided to read this first to see if I wanted to read Life After Theft. This novella is a prequel to Aprilynne Pike's novel Life After Theft.
